National Girls and Women Sports Day

By Raven Lingard

Today, February 2, 2011 is National Women and Girls Sports Day (NGWSD).  Created in 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated the first Wednesday in February annually and has become “the premiere occasion to celebrate the participation, success and accomplishments of girls and women athletes.   The celebration started with a single event in Washington, D.C. to honor Olympic volleyball star Flo Hyman and has grown into a nationwide celebration across all 50 states. On February 2, 2011, thousands will gather to celebrate NGWSD and the 2011 theme “Play, Believe, Achieve”.

The St. Louis City Board of Alderman recognized a local organization called SportsRAVE Online Magazine and Directory for their efforts to recognize Girl and Women Athletes in the St. Louis Area.  According to the Company’s Vice President of Business Results and Public Relations, “National Girls and Women Sports Day is an acknowledgment of their contributions to support achievement of girls and women across the nation.  SportsRAVE’s goal is to turn potential into achievement so that our girls can become the community leaders, CEOs and productive citizens of tomorrow.”  SportsRAVE will honor Inspiring Female Athletes at upcoming ceremonies planned over the next month throughout the area.
